Nikos Metaxotos and I have known each other for many years and have collaborated. He is not only a distinguished plastic surgeon, founder of the Symmetria center, a doctor at the Medical School of the University of Athens, and a friend. He is also the initiator of the non-profit organization “I Live For Me” that he founded 25 years ago with the aim of helping cancer patients and their families manage the effects of the disease on their daily lives.
In the battle with cancer, the primary concern for the patient is to win the battle with life. During treatment, his daily life changes. Simple and taken-for-granted aspects of daily life are overturned and he is faced with another reality that he must manage as best he can. “There are many deadly diseases, but the reason we curse cancer and fear it is because it changes our external image,” he told us in the press call to talk to us about the association’s new action.
One of the first changes that treatment brings is hair loss. Which, no matter how prepared the patient may be, is still shocking. The new initiative “Hair that Inspires: Stories of Courage” gives hope and strength to women fighting cancer. This action focuses on financially supporting women who lose their hair from chemotherapy, helping them to acquire the right wig. A wig is quite expensive and EOPPY subsidizes 75% of the purchase price and up to a certain amount. Often, the amount is not enough to cover the actual cost, especially for women who do not have private insurance. Recognizing this need, the association is committed to subsidizing up to the same amount. However, it is necessary for women to have submitted an application to EOPPY. The submission of applications begins on March 10 and is addressed to women living in Greece and Cyprus.
Apart from this action, the association invests in information and the importance of prevention by organizing workshops and using popular actors and singers as ambassadors.
