Thriving at 70, in other words aging gracefully, being active and vibrant, depends, as experts say, on the decisions we make in the years before. And more specifically, the habits we decide to abandon in our 50s and the conscious choices we make can have a profound impact on how we live our 70s.
What habits are these?
1) Unhealthy eating habits
This doesn't mean they suddenly adopted a strict diet, but rather that they focused on balance , incorporating more fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains into their meals, while limiting ready-made meals and processed foods. The diet helps maintain a healthy weight and also reduces the risk of chronic diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease.
2) Sedentary life
Sedentary lifestyle is a modern disease and its treatment is as simple as a short walk a day. At least this can be the beginning to slowly incorporate the exercise that is necessary
in physical and mental health .
3) Life on autopilot
Modern life traps many in the trap of living on autopilot. It is crucial to recognize this and begin to live mindfully and in the moment, truly experiencing what one is doing, being aware of thoughts, feelings, and surroundings.
4) Negative thoughts
Sometimes, our own thoughts can be our own worst enemy. We can get caught in a cycle of negative thinking, berating ourselves for failures or shortcomings. The other way is to face our mistakes and see them as learning opportunities, as well as focusing on our strengths and achievements. As English author Eliza Hartley writes: “This change in mindset makes a big difference. Today, I don’t just survive. I thrive – I live life with a renewed sense of confidence and positivity. Letting go of negative thoughts can change how we view life. It’s also about treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding that you would show a friend.”
5) The need for continuous employment
In today's fast-paced world, being busy is often seen as something to be proud of. But that doesn't help as we age. Time for rest and relaxation is essential. And so is achieving balance. Rest is not a luxury but a necessity for a healthy and fulfilling life. The next time you feel pressured to fill every moment with activities or tasks, remember: it's okay to slow down. It's okay to take a break.
6) Regrets
Regrets often take up more space in our minds than they deserve. They weigh us down, making it difficult to move forward. The key is to let them go and understand that while we can’t change the past, we can change our reaction to it. By letting go of regrets, one frees up mental and emotional space for growth, joy, and new experiences.
7) Fear of change
Change is inevitable. It is the only constant in life. Yet many of us fear and resist it. So embracing new experiences, opportunities, and challenges with an open mind is key. Changes in life are opportunities for growth, learning, and evolution. By embracing change, you adapt and remain resilient.
